Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail, causing white or yellow nail discolouration, thickening of the nail, and, in extreme cases, separation of the nail from the nail bed.

Both toenails and fingernails can be affected.

Fungal nail infection occurs in about 10% of the adult population.

If left untreated, the fungal infection proliferates and invades the nail bed by penetrating the margins of the nail.

Topical and oral medication can be prescribed to treat fungal nail infection. However, treatment can be lengthy and there can be side effects. Surgical removal of the nail is also possible, although, for obvious reasons, this is only to be recommended as a “last resort”.

Laser treatment has been shown to be an extremely safe and effective way of treating fungal nail infection with success rates in excess of 80%.

Short pulses of laser light energy heat the nail, to the point that the fungus is destroyed without collateral damage to the nail.

3 to 5 sessions of laser treatment are generally performed at monthly intervals. Because nails grow slowly, improvement is seen over several months as the damaged nail grows out.

We often recommend the use of multiple modes of therapy in conjunction to laser treatment including topical anti-fungal preparations, mechanical abrasion and UV shoe sanitizers.

It is also recommended that all nails are cut and filed down to a thickness of approximately 1mm prior to treatment.
