Facial thread veins or broken veins (telangiectasia) are small unsightly superficial veins that predominantly appear around the nose, but can also spread outwards onto the cheeks.

They are generally red, purple or blue in colour and mainly affect patients with a pale or fair skin type.

Thread veins occur when the vein dilates to such an extent that it can clearly be seen through the transparency of the skin.

In many cases, it can be difficult to pinpoint the precise reason why a patient has developed facial thread veins.

Some patients may have a genetic predisposition, but there can be other contributory factors such as frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions, high levels of caffeine or alcohol intake or spicy foods.  Excessive use of steroid creams and various auto-immune diseases are also known to contribute.

Individual discrete facial thread veins are often accompanied by diffuse redness or blush. This is caused by massive numbers of microscopic blood vessels so small and densely packed together that we are unable to see individual vessels and hence visualise a uniform blanket of redness.
