Prominent unsightly leg veins are a common problem. They occur when weak or damaged valves within the veins cause blood to pool, dilating the vein to such an extent that it becomes visible through the transparency of the skin. Because of the effects of gravity and ‘back pressure’ leg veins are more difficult to treat than facial veins.

The main risk factors for developing leg veins include prolonged periods of standing, pregnancy, obesity, hormones, genetics and general ageing.

Leg veins can be broadly categorised as varicose veins, reticular veins or thread veins (spider veins)

Varicose veins are greater than 3mm in diameter, usually blue or dark purple in colour and are often lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance. We recommend that varicose veins are treated by a vascular surgeon within a specialist centre – techniques include Endovascular Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) or Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). Please note that our Cambridge Laser Clinic does not provide this service.

Leg thread veins (telangiectasia) are very small (less than 1mm in diameter) superficial veins that resemble tree branches and range in colour from pink, red to bluish purple. They are very common affecting 10-20% of the general adult population and occur most commonly on the thighs, calves and ankles. Reticular veins are small (1mm – 3mm in diameter) blue, purple or greenish veins. They are flatter, smaller and less twisted than varicose veins.

There are currently two main methods available for the treatment of reticular and thread veins, sclerotherapy (the injection of a sclerosing agent into the vessel) and laser treatment.

Our Cambridge Laser Clinic offers a combination of sclerotherapy and 3 different laser systems (Nd Yag 1064nm LP / KTP 532nm LP and Pulsed Dye 595nm) to ensure optimal results.

Because we offer the entire range of sclerotherapy and vascular lasers, we can truly recommend the option that is best suited to your needs. Whatever we recommend, you can be assured that we are not using it because it is all we have to offer but because it is the best choice for you.

Our expert medical team has in excess of 30 years laser experience and have completed more than 150,000 successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at our Cambridge Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors, nurses and practitioners.
