Mole

Moles (or nevus) are caused by skin cells that grow in clusters called melanocytes. They produce the pigment melanin and can appear anywhere on your skin. Most appear in early childhood and typically each person has 10 – 40 moles by adulthood. Moles should be painless and not itch or bleed.

Moles on average last for 50 years, usually becoming more nodular and lighter in colour over time.

The main types of moles are:

  • Common Nevi – appear in childhood
  • Congenital Nevi – present at birth

Most moles are benign (non-cancerous). If you notice a change in any moles colour, thickness, size or shape you should see a dermatologist. You should also have a mole checked if it bleeds, itches or becomes painful.

The most significant complication is that some moles can turn into melanoma.

How are unwanted moles removed?

Many people have moles removed for cosmetic reasons. Moles should also be removed if changes that may indicate melanoma occur.

Excision Removal – your surgeon will cut away your mole by surgical excision under local anaesthetic requiring a small suture within the skin. A small scar is left which usually fades over time.

If you require a minor surgical procedure, why not book a consultation with our highly experienced consultant plastic surgeon to determine which treatment option is best for you.

Our clinic is Care Quality Commission registered and operates by strict safety and care protocols.
