Cyst

What is a cyst?

A cyst is a round lump often filled with fluid or puss. They can develop in any location, vary in size and are usually harmless.

Skin cysts usually grow slowly over time, varying in size from smaller than a pea to several centimetres across. They can become infected and painful or may cause issues with confidence. Rarely they can be cancerous.

Cysts can be caused by various factors including blocked ducts or glands, chronic inflammation, genetic factors or physical trauma.

Different types of Cysts

  • A cyst that forms in the top layer of the skin – Epidermoid cyst (or Sebaceous Cyst)
  • A cyst that develops in a hair follicle – Pilar Cyst (or Sebaceous Cyst)
  • A cyst in a joint or tendon – Ganglion Cyst
  • A fluid filled cyst on the back of the knee – Bakers Cyst
  • A fluid filled cyst in the vagina – Bartholin’s Cyst
  • A small cyst on the eyelid – Meibomian cyst or Chalazion

Treatment Options

Cysts are usually surgically removed by various methods including

  • Incision and drainage – ideal for smaller cysts. The surgeon will make a small incision and drain the cysts condense. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area prior to the procedure
  • Surgical Excision – this procedure involves total removal of the cyst including the cyst wall to prevent reoccurrence. Following local anaesthesia, an incision is made, the cyst removed, and the wound closed with stiches.
  • Minimal Excision or Punch biopsy – ideal for smaller cysts in sensitive areas. During this procedure, a small incision is made around the cyst and its content is squeezed out or removed using a punch tool.
  • Injection – A steroid injection may be used to reduce inflammation in non-infected cysts

Frequently asked questions

What happens during my consultation?

Following a full medical history the cyst is located and examined by your surgeon.

Which treatment is right for me?

Your surgeon will guide you as to the best option available to you.

Can cysts go away without treatment?

Cysts under the skin are unlikely to go away without medical intervention. They can temporarily decrease in size and become less noticeable.

Can cysts come back after they are removed?

In some cases, cysts can reoccur. If the cyst wall is not completely excised or a duct becomes blocked again, new cysts may form.

Typically, if the underlying cause is not completely addressed or managed a new cyst can develop over time.

Is the procedure painful?

The degree of pain experienced can vary depending on the size of the cyst, its location and the surgical technique used.

Prior to the procedure, your surgeon will numb the area with local anaesthetic. You may feel pressure, but discomfort should be minimal. Following the procedure discomfort within the treatment area is common.

How long does the procedure take?

Cyst removal typically takes 20-60 minutes
