Scar excision and scar revision most commonly aim to improve the visual appearance of unwanted scarring by surgical intervention. Sometimes the prime goal is not aesthetic refinement but functional improvement.
Surgical treatment can help improve a scar’s:
- Colour
- Size
- Stiffness
- Texture
- Thickness
Scar revision surgery is performed on scars resulting from injuries, accidents, or surgery. Many patients decide to undergo scar revision surgery to improve the appearance of scarring caused by acne, burns, or other skin conditions. Any area of the body can be treated.
Scar revisions are performed by making an incision around the scar and removing the scar tissue. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area prior to surgery.
The wound is skilfully closed with sutures and or adhesive strips.
Sutures are normally left in place for 5-14 days, depending on the scar’s location.
Even though scar revision usually improves the visual appearance of a scar significantly, it must be emphasised that any procedure that requires cutting the skin will leave a new scar. The goal is to create a much neater and less visible scar that merges nicely into the surrounding skin over time.
It will take 12 to 18 months to see the full clinical effects of your surgery.
Other methods of scar revision are available including laser therapy, surgical subcision, TCA cross, dermal fillers, fat grafting, cryotherapy, steroid injections and long chain silicon polymers.
Often a combination of treatment methods may give optimal results.
