How to treat age spots

Age spots are a common skin concern among many of our patients at Cambridge Laser Clinic. Age spots are smooth, flat, discoloured spots or patches found on the skin. As the name suggests, these spots typically affect older individuals, though they can also appear in younger people. They are more commonly found in those aged 50 and above and are generally harmless, but may impact confidence, particularly if they appear on areas of the body that are more noticeable or difficult to cover up.

Age spots are known by various names, such as:

  • Liver spots
  • Sun spots
  • Brown spots
  • Solar lentigines
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Hyperpigmentation

What Causes Age and Liver Spots?

Age and liver spots occur due to an overproduction of melanin in the skin, resulting in discoloured and pigmented patches. This can be caused by several factors, including:

  • The ageing process
  • Genetics
  • Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays
  • Hormonal changes
  • Skin injuries

Some causes, such as ageing, genetics, or hormonal changes, are beyond our control. We can however reduce the risk of future age spots by minimising sun exposure and avoiding tanning beds. Wearing a high factor sunscreen outdoors and covering up with sun protective clothing, like hats or long-sleeved tops, can also help.

Should I Be Concerned About Age Spots?

While age spots are harmless, they may sometimes resemble other conditions that require medical attention. If you are uncertain whether a discoloured spot or area of hyperpigmentation is an age spot, liver spot, or something else, consider consulting a dermatologist or your GP for further evaluation.

Age spots that change rapidly in colour or size should be reviewed by a medical professional. While they may occasionally cause itching, age spots are not typically painful, and they don’t ooze or bleed.

Can Age Spots Appear Anywhere?

Yes, age spots can appear anywhere on the body, although they are more likely to form in areas frequently exposed to the sun. Patients at Cambridge Laser Clinic often present with age and liver spots on their faces, the backs of their hands, feet, shoulders, chest, back, and arms.

How to Get Rid of Age Spots

A variety of treatments are available for age and liver spots, including natural remedies, prescription medications, medical-grade skincare, and laser treatments.

Removing Age Spots Naturally

Some people attempt to reduce age spots naturally using ingredients like apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, or bicarbonate of soda. While home remedies are generally safe, they may cause mild skin irritation, particularly in those with sensitive skin. However, natural treatments rarely achieve the same results as scientifically supported topical medications or professional skincare treatments.

Prescription Medication for Age Spots

Your GP or dermatologist may prescribe topical medications for treating age and liver spots. Hydroquinone and tretinoin are two common treatments that work by gradually lightening or bleaching the age spots. Regular use is necessary to maintain results, and there is a possibility of recurrence if treatment is discontinued.

Medical-Grade Skincare

In clinic treatments, such as chemical peels, microneedling, or clinically proven skincare products that can be used at home, can effectively reduce the appearance of liver spots. In clinic treatments typically require several appointments and products that are used at home will require a daily commitment to achieve full results.

The benefits of these treatments are  that they will not only help improve the appearance of age spots, but can also enhance overall skin tone and quality.

Laser Treatment for Age Spots

Laser treatment offers one of the quickest and most effective methods for removing age spots, often producing results within one to three sessions. Patients who opt for laser treatments generally experience longer lasting results than with other methods. After treatment, full results may appear within a few days to several weeks.

Many patients at Cambridge Laser Clinic have tried various methods to treat age spots before choosing laser treatment. Once they experience the results, they often find laser treatment to be a more convenient and effective option, requiring less commitment and providing superior results.
