Christmas Countdown for the Best Laser Treatments: Calm Rosacea Before the Festive Season
Winter skin and rosacea: a familiar story
As the festive season approaches, many of us look forward to cosy evenings, celebrations, and time with friends. But for those living with rosacea, colder weather, central heating, and holiday stress can bring an unwelcome return of redness, flushing, and sensitivity – often just when you want your skin to look its best.
At Cambridge Laser Clinic, our consultant-led medical team specialises in laser treatment for rosacea, using scientifically proven vascular lasers to calm visible blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and restore even-toned skin. By starting treatment in November, patients can enjoy a visibly calmer complexion in time for Christmas gatherings.
Why does rosacea flare up in winter?
Temperature changes and vascular instability
Rosacea skin reacts strongly to changes in temperature. Moving from the cold winter air into centrally heated rooms causes facial blood vessels to expand and contract rapidly. This vascular instability leads to increased redness and, over time, visible capillaries.
Festive triggers to be mindful of
Traditional Christmas indulgences – alcohol, spicy foods, and stress – are well-known rosacea triggers. Even a glass of mulled wine can cause flushing. Recognising and managing these triggers, while supporting your skin with professional treatment, can significantly reduce flare-ups.
A medical condition, not just sensitivity
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the skin’s microcirculation. It’s not simply irritation – it involves dilation of superficial vessels, inflammation, and sometimes papules or pustules. Understanding this mechanism is key to effective management.

How rosacea laser treatment works
At Cambridge Laser Clinic, we use advanced laser technologies that precisely target haemoglobin – the pigment in red blood cells – without damaging the surrounding skin. When the light energy is absorbed, it gently heats the vessel wall, causing it to collapse and be reabsorbed naturally. The result is a clearer, calmer complexion with long-term vascular control.
Precision wavelength targeting
- Nd:YAG 1064 nm LP Laser – penetrates deep into the skin to treat larger blue or purple vessels (0.1-0.6 mm). It also reduces flushing by addressing deeper feeder vessels.
- KTP 532 nm LP Laser – ideal for small, bright-red, surface capillaries (0.1-0.3 mm).
- VBeam 595 nm Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) – the gold-standard device for diffuse red blush and generalised facial redness, now far more effective than traditional IPL.
Each wavelength is chosen according to vessel size and depth, allowing highly selective treatment for every subtype of rosacea.

What to expect during treatment
Sensation and comfort
The laser light is delivered in rapid pulses that feel similar to the flick of a fine rubber band. The procedure produces only mild discomfort and requires no anaesthesia. Most patients can return to normal activities immediately after their session – making it easy to fit treatment into your pre-Christmas schedule.
Recovery and side effects
Mild redness or irritation may occur, similar to light sunburn, and typically subsides within a few hours. Temporary pigment change or minor bruising is rare. The VBeam PDL now operates in a non-bruising mode using multi-pass protocols, allowing an effective result without social downtime.
Your Christmas countdown plan – when to start laser treatments
Timing your treatment plan strategically ensures you achieve your best skin in time for the festive season.
November – The foundation phase
Start your first laser session to address deeper vessels and reduce inflammation. This sets the groundwork for calmer skin as the cold weather intensifies.
Early December – The refinement phase
Follow up with a second session focused on brightening and strengthening the skin. This phase helps refine texture and minimise diffuse redness before Christmas events.
Mid-December – The skin-soothing phase
Shift focus to maintenance and barrier care. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers, SPF 30+, and hydrating serums to support post-laser recovery and lock in results through the holidays.
✨ Tip: spacing sessions three to four weeks apart allows for optimal healing and collagen stimulation between treatments.

How many treatments are needed?
The number of sessions depends on whether redness is diffuse or discrete.
- Diffuse redness: Typically two to four sessions using VBeam 595 nm PDL with multi-pass techniques at monthly intervals. Each pass varies in spot size and pulse width to target multiple vessel depths.
- Discrete thread veins: Usually one to two sessions using Nd:YAG 1064 nm or KTP 532 nm LP lasers, spaced eight to ten weeks apart.
These advanced multi-pass methods accelerate improvement and reduce the total sessions required – making it easier to complete your course before the end-of-year celebrations.
